Current Book Project:

"Fernando Zóbel: Life and Letters"

Above: Image and text from a letter to Bonnie Nims, Sept. 21, 1963

Fernando Zóbel, an artist, patron of the arts, cultural historian and teacher, had many friends in the Philippines, Europe and the United States. Peripatetic by nature, he corresponded constantly, sometimes typing, but more often writing in flowing script using Mont Blanc pens. In his letters he bragged, gossiped, narrated and philosophized. Some of his most engaging letters incorporate decorations, calligraphy and caricatures.

“Zobel: Life and Letters” will open with a preface designed to introduce the major themes and questions to be addressed by the book. After that, six chapters, each concerning a period of the artist's life, will include biographical and thematic material designed to introduce selections of letters, and excerpts of letters as well as images of Zóbel’s paintings and drawings. The manuscript is expected to be about 175 pages total.
