#Repost @gagosiangallery with @repostapp ・・・ “I’ve always been interested in Expressionism as a way out of Modernism and Cubism and Progressivism and all the crappy ideas of the twentieth century, and I see it as a way to kind of upset the whole card table. So I was playing around with these overwrought parodies of Expressionism, like Otto Muller or Emil Nolde. It’s funny because Expressionism is supposed to be so anti-rational and the opposite of Neue Sachlichkeit, of Christian Schadd and Otto Dix, but I always saw them as really complementary. Anyway, I always try to keep an Expressionist orchid alive in my world.” —John Currin. Gagosian is presenting a selection of drawings by John Currin at Frieze New York. The drawings were chosen from over one hundred sketchbooks and notepads, revealing the evolution of Currin’s creative process and technical mastery. The fair opens to the public this Friday, May 5.
