I was amazed and delighted to find this original painting on rice paper by Sueo Serisawa (1910-2004) at a second hand store today. A fun fact about Serisawa: his show at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened on Dec. 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor Day. It was an awful setback for the career of a rising Japanese American modernist who had painted Judy Garland’s portrait and taught painting to Edward G. Robinson. I met him once in Idyllwild where he had retired. #sueoserisawa #japaneseamerican #japaneseamericans #lacma #calligraphy #japanesecalligraphyart #japanesecalligraphy #ricepaper #abstractart #thriftstorefinds #idyllwild #modern #modernism
